Self-Portraits

Finn Ballard's self-portraits follow the artist through the barren night streets of Berlin, a lone figure attempting to navigate amongst the shadows and signifiers of capitalist desire, civic pride, and urban alienation. Part of a project in which a self-portrait was taken daily over several months, Ballard employs these images to reflect on living as an expatriate and a transman. Simultaneously distanced from, and reminiscent of, 20th-century modernist reflections of life in the metropolis, Ballard's imagery flirts with the naïve and the mundane, while still affording an otherworldly and meditative view into one man's daily life in the city.   —M&D
